维妙维肖的重迭词
英语中有些词是通过重复一个词的基本音节而派生来的，构词学上称之为重迭词(reduplication words)。fuddy-duddy（大惊小怪的人，为fuddy的重迭）；
handy-dandy（一种猜对方手中握有什么东西的游戏，为handy的重迭。）；
hoity-toity（轻率，傲慢，来自hoity）；
tittle-tattle（闲聊，来自tattle）。
重迭词的一个显著特点就是具有一定的韵律和较强的节奏感。
它们有的押尾韵，如：
knicker-bocker（纽约人）；
jiggery-pockery（欺骗）；
walkie-lookie（一种手提式摄像机），
而有的重迭词既押尾韵又押头韵，如：
niddle-noddle（不断地点头）；
flipperty-flopperty（松驰地下垂着）。
由于重迭词讲究韵律，因此，读起来朗朗上口，听上去娓娓动听，可以说正是这种谐音大大地增添了词的表现力，让人听了有如身临其境，目睹其人的感受。例如：
1.She pitter-pattered along the hallway.
她在走廊里哒哒啪啪地走。
2.The bell goes ding-dang.
铃儿在了当地响。
3.He is shilly-shally about it in his mind.
对此事，他一直犹豫不决。
4.The two gossips，when coming together，would tittle-tattle to the slander of others.
那两个长舌妇，碰到一起时总要喋喋不休地诽谤别人。
5.And all argle-bargling suggested it was at the end of the fair.
而这一片付价还价的嘈杂声说明集市已近尾音。
6.The druken man zig-zagged down the street.
酒鬼在大街上东倒西歪地行走。
7.She was so round and roly-ploy that I used to wonder how she ever moved fast enough to catch a bird.
她身圆体胖，我过去总感到不解的是她何以能捉到一只小鸟。
8.Willy-nilly,every youth must serve in the army for three years.
每个年轻人，不管是否愿意，都得服三年兵役。
9. He pooh-poohed the idea.
他对那条建议嗤之以鼻。
