THE smell of a roast dinner cooking slowly in the oven is unforgettable. Waiting for the wonderful meat to cook, it can be hard to remain patient. A delicious scent drifts through the kitchen, causing the stomachs of family and friends to rumble in expectation. 晚餐在烤炉中慢慢烘烤着，那种香味令人终生难忘。等待烹制大餐的时候总是急不可耐。厨房中香飘四溢，把家人和朋友们满是期待的肚子都惹得咕咕直叫。 The Sunday roast has been a tradition in Britain for centuries. Sunday was known as the day of rest, when the shops were shut and businesses closed. Families would go to church and return home to eat together around the table. 几百年来，星期日大餐已经成为英国的一项传统。据说星期日是休息日，商店都关门停业。全家人会去教堂，然后回家围聚在餐桌旁一起进餐。 Beef, chicken, pork or lamb are the traditional meats used for a roast dinner. Roast potatoes and vegetables are prepared to go with the meat: the choice depends on the season. Roast beef is the classic Sunday lunch and must be served with Yorkshire pudding. This strange-sounding food was named after a part of northern England where it was first created. It is made from batter － a mixture of flour, water, milk and eggs － and served with gravy. Roast chicken is often served with sausages which have been wrapped in bacon. Fewer people go to church, shops are open all weekend and families often live far apart. Many had predicted the decline of the Sunday roast dinner. But Tescos, a British supermarket chain, reported more young people buying joints of meat than ever before. It seems young people who move to big cities like London, create their own traditions and build a family of friends to invite for lunch on a Sunday.
