In the cartoon we can see a tall and thin man, along with a short and stout man are using suitable hotpot for dinner. Apparently, the picture aims to emphasize that anything to be done must be measured in advance so that we are able to find a proper way to do it.
This same principle applies to solving any other problem. Firstly, when we want to know the reality of something, we must describe it like it is, getting rid of our prejudices and exaggerations, so that we can have an unbiased view. Secondly, the object should be analyzed in a concrete way so that we can grasp the reasons and rules of it. Thirdly, we must adapt our approach to solving a problem, for each situation is different from the others. So we must view a problem from different perspectives.
The cartoon implies different meanings to different people. A teacher should adopt different teaching methods according to the students in the class; a doctor should prescribe different treatments according to the patient’s symptoms; a farmer should seed different plants according to the various conditions of the earth. Nowadays, college students are required to take part in some social practice, such as being an assistant in companies, or doing surveys, especially during the holidays. Social practice is gradually becoming more essential for China s higher education.
However, social practice has both advantages and disadvantages for college students. On the one hand, it provides students more opportunities to contact with the real world off-campus. Besides, it helps students to grasp some practical skills, especially communication skills, which is an essential supplement to on-campus study. Moreover, social practice can widen students vision. On the other hand, the negative effects cannot be neglected: students major task is learning knowledge, while curiosity about off-campus world may distract them; sometimes social practice is even treated usuriously and becomes a waste of time. Despite the potential negative effects of social practice, I strongly support social practice for college students, since as a whole; the benefits overwhelm the likely harm. the art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. for life is a parado: it enjoins us to cling to its many gifts even while it ordains their eventual relinquishment. the rabbis of old put it this way: a man comes to this world with his fist clenched, but when he dies, his hand is open.
surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is wondrous, and full of a beauty that breaks through every pore of god s own earth. we know that this is so, but all too often we recognize this truth only in our backward glance when we remember what was and then suddenly realize that it is no more.
we remember a beauty that faded, a love that waned. but we remember with far greater pain that we did not see that beauty when it flowered, that we failed to respond with love when it was tendered.
a recent eperience re-taught me this truth. i was hospitalized following a severe heart attack and had been in intensive care for several days. it was not a pleasant place.
one morning, i had to have some additional tests. the required machines were located in a building at the opposite end of the hospital, so i had to be wheeled across the courtyard on a gurney.
as we emerged from our unit, the sunlight hit me. thats all there was to my eperience. just the light of the sun. and yet how beautiful it was -- how warming, how sparking, how brilliant! i looked to see whether anyone else relished the suns golden glow, but everyone was hurrying to and fro, most with eyes fied on the ground. then i remembered how often i, too, had been indifferent to the grandeur of each day, too preoccupied with petty and sometimes even mean concerns to respond from that eperience is really as commonplace as was the eperience itself: lifes gifts are precious -- but we are too heedless of them.
here then is the first pole of life s paradoical demands on us : never too busy for the wonder and the awe of life. be reverent before each dawning day. embrace each hour. seize each golden minute.
hold fast to life...but not so fast that you cannot let go. this is the second side of life s coin, the opposite pole of its parado: we must accept our losses, this is not an easy lesson to learn, especially when we are young and think that the world is ours to command, that whatever we desire with the full force of our passionate being can, nay, will, be ours. but then life moves along to confront us with realities, and slowly but surely this truth dawns upon us.
at every stage of life we sustain losses -- and grow in the process. we begin our independent lives only when we emerge from the womb and lose its protective shelter. we enter a progression of schools, then we leave our mothers and fathers and our childhood homes. we get married and have children and then have to let them go. we confront the death of our parents and our spouses. we face the gradual or not so gradual waning of our strength. and ultimately, as the parable of the open and closed hand suggests, we must confront the inevitability of our own demise, losing ourselves as it were, all that we were or dreamed to be.

A brief survey of them reveals that human factors still prove to be the leading causes. For example, three of these fires were caused by the students use of electric water-heaters. As students often leave the heaters unattended, the risks are rather high should the water in the bottle boil dry while no one is around to turn off the power. In other cases, fires were also caused by stoves, candles, cigarette butts, etc.
Since most of these disasters could have been prevented if proper precautions had been taken, students should be better educated on the importance and measures of fire control. The following three reminders are of particular importance for us students: First, learn how to use a fire extinguisher. Second, double-check candles, heaters, stoves and other electric appliances, and make sure there are no open flames before leaving rooms. Lastly, do not smoke in the dorm.
