答：abbreviate是“缩写、缩短”的意思，尤指词的缩写；abridge是“节略、删节”的意思，尤指不改变书或文章的内容而加以缩短，比如：We usually abbreviate the word“television” to TV. 我们通常把“television”这个词缩写成“TV”。This book is abridged from the original.这本书是从原文删略而成的。

abide怎么用???
答：它作及物动词和作不及物动词意思是不一样的。它作及物动词，意为“容忍”，常用于否定句和疑问句，通常与can, could连用，后接名词、代词和动词不定式。例如：She can?t abide rude people.她不能容忍粗鲁的人。而它作不及物动词，意思则是“遵守，履行”，必须和介词by连用。例如：I abide by what I said. 我说的话是算数的。?
abide, bear, endure, stand, tolerate都有“容忍”之义，它们?有何异同??
答：这五个动词在表示“容忍”时其用法基本一致，可以通用，都可以和can，could的否定式和疑问式连用，只是endure的词义要广一些，它除了“容忍”外，还可以指“忍受”(痛苦、困难、寒冷等)。例如：endure toothache(humiliation, torture, a setback, inconveniences)忍受牙痛(羞辱、折磨、挫折、不便)。
