As I was preparing these remarks, I realized that when I was first elected President, most of you – the Class of 20xx – were just starting high school. Today, you’re graduating at college. I used to joke about being old. Now I realize I’m old. (Laughter.) It’s not a joke anymore. (Laughter.)
But seeing all of you here gives me some perspective. It makes me reflect on the changes that I’ve seen over my own lifetime. So let me begin with what may sound like a controversial statement – a hot take.
Given the current state of our political rhetoric and debate, let me say something that may be controversial, and that is this: America is a better place today than it was when I graduated from college. (Applause.) Let me repeat: America is by almost every measure better than it was when I graduated from college. It also happens to be better off than when I took office – (laughter) – but that’s a longer story. (Applause.) That’s a different discussion for another speech.
But think about it. I graduated in 1983. New York City, America’s largest city, where I lived at the time, had endured a decade marked by crime and deterioration and near bankruptcy. And many cities were in similar shape. Our nation had gone through years of economic stagnation, the stranglehold of foreign oil, a recession where unemployment nearly scraped 11 percent. The auto industry was getting its clock cleaned by foreign competition. And don’t even get me started on the clothes and the hairstyles. I’ve tried to eliminate all photos of me from this period. I thought I looked good. (Laughter.) I was wrong.

How can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highly philosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage. The story not only caters to everyones inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa.
If a person inherits his fathers millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give another analogy. If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely David Beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules by not allowing Arsenals defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success.
Thats why we greatly admire Stephen Hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.

Liang,a clerk with Sams Club,told Shenzhen Daily yesterday that the club required the Miandianwang outlet to do so in its contract. According to Liang,all the departments in the club switched to biodegradable containers during the Spring Festival holiday. Zhao Hua,with the energy division of the Shenzhen Municipal Economic Development Bureau,one of the five municipal government departments involved in the curbing of white pollution in the city,said on Monday that large panies and retailers like Wal-Mart and Vanguard have responded to the decree by switching to biodegradable containers. But she admitted that is just the tip of the iceberg in the seemingly endless war on white pollution in the city. Zhaos bureau has met with four other relevant departments on several occasions. What they produced is not a feasible solution but an echo or rewording of the Central Government decree,according to Luo Wei from Shenzhen Municipal Legal Affairs Bureau,who is responsible for reviewing this "echo". The ”echo" has now been passed on to the municipal government which is expected to announce it formally in the near future. But Luo said shes not sure if this rewording can play a significant role in eliminating white pollution in the city. "We dont lack laws,regulations or decrees. The real concern is the effective enforcement of these laws or regulations," said Luo. Zhao Hua admitted that cities like Shanghai and other coastal cities which are sensitive about their image as tourist destinations are doing a better job in this regard. "Shanghai is said to have produced a very detailed handbook on how to carry out the curbing work and Hainan has even banned disposable foam slippers in hotels," Zhao said. 3.Good
afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, honorable judges.As a citizen of a country, I have a birth certificate, a household register and a identity card. I am entitled to certain rights, responsibilities and privileges. I have freedom of movements in the country, I obey the country’s laws, and I enjoy the convenience of social policies and so on .What about a citizen of globe? Is there anything to characterize the global citizenship? A certificate, a register or certain rights? Not really. Global citizenship means a world where people are treated and respected equally for who they are. It is about helping people that are less fortunate. It is about inclusiveness. Interacting and working together is the core of being and belonging. We need to realize how important our connections are with others in our friendships, our neighborhoods, our communities, and with our planet. In another word, Global Citizenship is about people’s awareness of seeking the common good. It is about everyone.Is my idea too abstract? Here I’ve got a vivid example. When I was a child, my father always told me some stories about the past generation. Once he told me a story about a doctor. When the doctor heard people suffering in Spain because of the civil war, he came to help. He saw many people dying just because they had no money. Then he proposed a system that enabled the poor to have medical treatment. It is the beginning of the idea of Socialized Medical Care. After the war, the doctor worked hard to improve the treatment of tuberculosis. In 1938, the second Sino-Japanese war broke out in China. The fifty-year-old doctor came to help again. During his years in China, he trained more than 1000 Chinese to be medics and doctors. It was him that designed the world’s first mobile medical unit which saved thousands of lives.In the story, what impressed me most was a description of this admirable doctor. My father could still remember it even after decades. It was “his utter devotion to others without any thought of self was shown in his great sense of responsibility in his work and his great warm-heartedness towards all comrades and the people”.Till now, you must know the doctor.
