斯伯森说过，教好外语的首要条件是要尽可能让学生接触外语和使用外语。学外语就像学游泳一样，学生必须泡在水中，而不是偶尔沾沾水，学生必须潜到水里去。这样，他最后才能像一个熟练的游泳者那样乐在其中，家长要给学生在生活中多创造听说的机会，让他们多听多讲。
我国古代教育家孔子曰：“知之者不如好之者，好之者不如乐之者”，说明了兴趣的重要性。兴趣是学习的动力，只有激发学生对口语表达产生浓厚的兴趣，才能使孩子的口语能力得到提高。情境可以使学生产生言语的动机，并提供言语的材料。从而促进其语言运用能力的发展。家长应善于利用各种方式营造英语口语表达的氛围，创造有利于学生说的情境，激发学生说的欲望，让学生在生活中感知语言，交流语言，发展语言。
家长应当扮演的角色
家长是孩子的'第一任教师，孩子具有很强的模拟才能，家长的态度在很大水平上抉择了孩子的开展。家长应当是孩子学习英语口语和听力历程中的模范、引诱者和学习同伴。首先家长应当自动的学习，为孩子建立一个好的模范，自动跟孩子说英语，多与孩子沟通、分享学习后果。
其次，家长应准确的引诱孩子学习英语口语，防止功利心的存在。不要批判孩子在学习中犯的错，把学英语放在兴致造就上，让孩子在轻松愉快的气氛中学习英语。家长最好能成为孩子学习的同伴，和孩子一起学唱歌曲、听故事、答复问题、点数、绘画、讲故事、独特探究、寻觅答案。
孩子学习英语口语最大的搅扰
攀比
跟他人比，让孩子听了十分丧气，可以发生逆反的心理。所以家长应当维持良好的心态，应给孩子勉励与肯定。
批判
无论是孩子还是成人，都愿望得到他人的赏识与肯定，批判会造故意理上的压力，会消除人做事件的踊跃性和进取心。防止说“你怎样这么笨！你上课干吗去了？再这样上来你就不要学英语口语和听力了！”应采用赏识的态度赞助孩子学习，当体现好时给予他夸奖，当孩子涌现同伴是给予他勉励和支撑。
