Manager: John, could you come to my office? I need to talk to you.
经理：约翰，你能到我办公室来一下吗?我需要和你谈谈。
John: Sure. I'll be there as soon as I finish this document.
约翰：好的。我弄完这个文件就过去。
Manager: No. Come here right now.
经理：不行。现在就来。
John: OK. ( enters Mangers office )

John: What's the matter?
约翰：什么事?
Manager: I'm sorry to say that we have to let you go, John.
经理：很遗憾，我们得让你走了，约翰。
John: Why? I work very hard.

Manager: Well, you're working hard but not efficiently. And you don't work well with other employees.

John: Well, some of those other guys are not the same kind I'd like to communicate with, but if that's important to you, I'll try to get along with them.

Manager: I'm afraid it's too late. We are downsizing our work force and you'll have to go.

Manager: We can give you the option of resigning rather than being fired, because it will look better on your resume when you apply for another job if you resign.

1.“get along(well) with sb.”意为“与某人相处融洽或关系好”，相当享“get on well with sb.”。
2.“work force”原意为“劳动力”，在本对话中指“员工”。
3.“rather than”相当于“instead of”，意为“而不…”，其前置对比的两个事物或动作性质上要一致，例如：Jim decided to quit rather than accept the new rules.(吉姆决定辞职，而不接
受新规定。)注意，“rather than”后面可以直接接动词原形，而“instead of”后需接动词ing形式。

与解雇有关的英语习语
中国人常说“被炒鱿鱼了”以表示“被解雇”、“被开除”。为什么呢?炒鱿鱼是一道菜，味美可口;炒熟时，鱿鱼就会卷起来，很像雇员卷铺盖走人的样子。其实英语里也有一些形象的习语来表示“
被解雇”，比如：
1. get the boot“boot”本义是“靴子”，“get the boot”指“被踢了脚”，比喻为“被开除，被解雇”。
2. get the sack“sack”的意思是“袋子，麻袋”，“get the sack”的字面意思是“得到麻袋”，但比喻为“被开除”，其原因是旧时代雇主解雇工人时会让其用麻袋装好自己的工具、用品等走人。
3. get the axe “axe”是。斧子，斧头”的意思，“get the axe”的字面意思是“被斧子砍”，比喻为“被解雇”，非常形象地表达了雇主开除工人时的狠心，又体现了被解雇者的无奈。
