Today I was deeply stricken by a true story I read on line. It is telling how a blind but strong-willed young man is struggling and fighting with his tortuous fate in quest of his own happiness and value regardless of all the agony he has encountered.
The man, called Jim, was born blind due to an inherited disease that resulted from genetic mutation. Since he was born, he has never touched a slim beam of light with his eyes. He has no idea at all what this world is like. I believe no one with full faculties can imagine the enormous pain he has suffered. We are visually healthy. Though we may also suffer short eyesight or other kinds of eye diseases, we can still see everything around with the aids of medicine or spectacles. Even though some severely visually impaired people cannot see things clearly even with the assistance of glasses, they can still recognize or perceive the way to mind their business independently.
Nonetheless, even walking on his own seems a great obstacle to Jim. It is thoroughly beyond my wildest dream how many fall-downs he has suffered since he began to step out his first step until he finally managed to walk smoothly with a stick in hand. In the face of tough setbacks, he did not surrender even a little! Rather, he confronted his extremely stiff situation stoutly and challenged the cruel destiny with his persistent efforts. He learnt to do all the trifles in daily life under the instructions and guidance of his families and friends, such as cleaning the floor, washing face, taking a bath and brushing teeth, etc. Then after mastering these basic things for living, he went to learn massage. He had to pay multiple efforts and sweats than ordinary people to master the same skills. But he insisted till the end. Where there is a will, there is a way. Eventually he found his way out and got another piece of brand-new world that could truly demonstrate his own values to the society. One sentence he often tells others is that he can live and feed his own mouth independently with his hard work! And he justifies the truth of it with his actions.
After reading his story, I could not help sinking into thought for a long time, reflecting on my own superior situation and condition compared with his. Many times we tend to groan or complain about various things about life. Someone may complain that he is not a genius. Another will groan that she is not beautiful enough to be a model. Even some may nag that he is not a millionaire! Man is always greedy and few will know to feel content with present. Actually we are bathing in happiness all the time, but we always neglect it and pursue some unrealistic things nonstop. Only when we lose what we have at hand do we truly know its value, but all is too late then!
There is really no reason for us not treasuring what we have at hand, not to mention giving up life! Seeing the sunny and confident smile on Jim’s face, I felt my heart was instilled with great power ,the power to conquer, the power to live on, the power to challenge, the power to fight!
