这是中国射箭在奥运会史上的第一枚金牌。这也是中国代表团在本届奥运会上获得的第21枚金牌。
张娟娟在这以前，先后遇到了“梦之队”的选手朱贤贞和尹玉姬。尹玉姬是12箭世界记录的保持者，她曾在射箭世界杯土耳其站的比赛上以12箭19环的惊人成绩打破了当时的世界纪录。但是张娟娟发挥了她优异的成绩，以106-101和115-109成功普级，将两位韩国选手打败。
后来，张娟娟在决赛时再次遇到了韩国选手。这次是韩国女队领军人物朴成贤。
