The Memory of Bitter Sweetness

On that unforgettable afternoon of August, 2003, I received the notice that I was accepted by Liaoning University. I took the notice empty-headedly and went back home. It was raining lightly. The soft breeze kissed my face and flicked my long hair. The cool fresh air suddenly woke my sense and sensibility. My dream was realized eventually after so many years' hard working. I could sit in a bright room in a prosperous city, listen to the versatile professors' lectures and talk intensely with my classmates. How wonderful that would be!

Ahead, a shabby low house appeared, that was the whole property Mom and I owned. Seeing it, I suddenly realized that going to university also meant I would be far away from Mom, who gave me life, raised me and supported me to receive education. She would be all alone in the empty house, moreover where could she obtain so much money. The sudden awareness of reality bewildered me. Happiness was always relative!

I opened the door, and tiptoed into the room. Mom was ill in bed for working too hard.

"Are you accepted?" she asked in a pretended calmness.

"yah. Mom."

"Really? My honey?" she sat up suddenly.

I went over to help her hastily, "accepted by Liaoning University."

"I know you will, you are always my pride."

She smiled with relief, and got up immediately. She forgot her illness completely.

After the delicious supper, I went to bed early. I wanted to chew up my happiness carefully. I went to sleep with a sweet dream. Suddenly I was waken up by some slight sounds. I opened my eyes and saw that my Mom was sitting in the faint light. She was becoming so old before I know. Years had turned her black hair into gray, and ages had ploughed deeply in her face, and every wrinkle was a story of hardship of living. She opened a drawer, and took out a small box. From the small box, she took something out cautiously, and then began to count. Oh it was money! She was counting it slowly and carefully , then signed deeply. I took hold of the blanket tightly, and clenched my teeth. Something in my throat choked me, and I almost couldn't breathe. Mom suddenly tuned to me. I closed my painful eyes and pretend to sleep soundly. She patted my head with slow, gentle strokes. A strong wave of emotion came over me, I burst into tears. Mom took me into her arms and held me tightly. After a while, she wiped away my tears and looked into my eyes, "Everything would be better tomorrow." Her magic words filled me with strength and energy.

I slept soundly in her powerful arms with that firm belief: Tomorrow, everything would be better!
