A True ‘Love’ Story
Mr. Mean works and lives in X city of Northwest China. He usually says to others, ‘I am a journalist, who takes a very important position in newspaper GJ office. I also have an elder brother who is an official of high position in C city and who can easily offer me a position in the government of C. If you have some problems, get contact with me, and I will help you with my total effort.’ Everybody believes that he is a kind man with great ability. But nobody has ever seen one article of his in newspaper GJ.Mr. Mean is about thirty and still has no girlfriend. His parents frequently impose pressure on him in order to urge him to get married quickly, and he therefore feels worried. He then tells everyone that he needs and wants wife and expects they will one day introduce him a suitable lady. He emphasizes, ‘do not forget to tell them about my career and my brother.’
One day a warm –hearted woman introduced him a 21-year-old girl Miss Disgusting, who is an acquaintance of her sister and who is a temporary nurse in a small hospital of a neighboring town. At first the go-between was afraid the girl would not take a fancy to Mr. Mean, for Mr. Mean is too short and is a little lame. But after reconsidering, he thought it is possible, for Miss Disgusting has no diploma whereas Mr. Mean has a Bachelor degree and a powerful brother.
So the two people met and both were very satisfied. Five days later, the two lived together in the room Mr. Mean rented. Another five days later, Mr. Mean find a temporary job in a hospital of this city. It seemed that the two were in a harmonious relation. The go-between was happy, too, for he thought he had done a good deed.
Forty days later, Mr. Mean came to the go-between’s office. To everybody’s great surprise, he had many wounds in the face and on the neck, which were obviously the works of woman’s scratches. And to everybody’s greater surprise, he asked the go-between for some money to borrow. His reason is this: ‘I have spent 3000 Yuan or more on the girl. I bought modern clothes and cosmetics and her new job cost me much.’ The go-between was unwilling to lend him, for Mr. Mean was not his good friends, but just his acquaintance. Mr. Mean said, with a tone of begging, ‘I just borrow for a few days. As soon as my salary is given to me at the end of this month, I will return. Do you have 500?’ The go-between said, ‘no.’ ‘Do you have 300?’ ‘No.’ ‘100?’ ‘Sorry. I forgot to take money with me today.’ Then Mr. Mean asked one of the go-between’s colleagues, ‘have you?’ The colleague, who didn’t know him at all, got annoyed by him and said ironically, ‘I have here only ten Yuan and a few fen. If you want, I will lend you.’ ‘O.K. I will return later.’ Mr. Mean said happily. The man gave him ten Yuan. But later every time he got to the office, he looked as if he had never borrowed any money.
One day after Mr. Mean’ arrival, Miss Disgusting also came. She cried to the go-between, ‘Look at the man you introduced to me!! He is so short, so ugly and so poor. His Job isn’t stable and he has no powerful brother at all. He is also a lame man. I was cheated by you tow. Now I want to go back to my parents’ I have no money. You should borrow me some. The go-between was astonished and also irritated. He said, ‘I just introduced this man to you. I didn’t force you to live with him so quickly. You should investigate and watch him for a comparatively long period. But you didn’t. It is your own responsibility, and none of my business. As for money, I have no obligation to offer you. Bye-bye!!
Later Miss Disgusting and Mr. Mean come to the go-between’s office frequently and respectively. They complain and curse each other and then want to borrow some money if possible.
However, Miss Disgusting still lives in the rented room of Mr. Mean’s.
