PEP Grade 4 Unit 6 At a farm Part A let’s learn

I am going to talk about page 70, part A Let’s learn, Unit 6, Book 4.

Firstly I’d like to analyze the teaching materials. This unit discusses about the names of some animals and the pattern “What are they? They are…” This lesson is the first one of Part A Unit 6. It consists of two parts Let’s learn and let’s do. In the part of Let’s learn it requires Ss to master the words: horses, sheep, goats, cows, lambs, hens, and the pattern “What are they? They are…”. The Ss have learned many animals. They are still very interested in the animals. So they will be very interested in the new lesson.

According to the teaching materials I make the following aims:

Knowledge Aims:

(1) Enable Ss to master the words: horses, sheep, goats, cows, lambs, hens and the usage of the plural forms of the animals

(2) Enable Ss to use the structure What are they? They are…freely in the situation.

(3)Enable Ss to do the actions while listening to the tape.

Ability aims:

(1)Develop Ss’ basic ability of listening and speaking.

(2)Enable Ss to use What are they? They are… in the situation.

(3)Enable Ss to study in groups and cooperate with others

Emotion aims:

(1)Train Ss’ spirit of cooperation and consciousness of competition.

(2)Excite their study motivation. Help them establish good study habit.

(3) Train the Ss’ sense of loving animals and loving life

Teaching importance:

(1)Enable Ss to master words: horses, sheep, goats, cows, lambs, hens

(2)Enable Ss to grasp What are they? They are…in the real situation.

Teaching difficulty:

The pronunciation of plural form of animals

Secondly I’d like to analyze Ss and show you my teaching and learning methods:

Ss of Grade Four in our school have learned English for more than three years. They have got a little ability of listening, speaking and reading. They are active and competitive. But their attention can’t be kept long. In this lesson I mainly used the task-based learning methods. I present the tasks by making a context with the help of the pictures the multi-media and my gestures. In order to help Ss finish the tasks effectively I design activities such as chanting singing, guessing games a memory game etc. I also arrange individual work、 pair work、 group work for Ss to practise English. The CAI、 a ball、 a box the tapes 、a recorder will be needed. Ss must prepare for their school things.

I will have group competition and individual competition. I’ll praise Ss from time to time. I’ll give out Ss a piece of paper. When they have a chance to speak English they can draw a star on the paper. It’s necessary to keep Ss’ interest.

Thirdly I will discuss with you how I deal with the teaching steps and its aims:

Step 1 Warming-up

Organize Ss to do actions:

Dog, dog, act like a dog.

Cat, cat, act like a cat.

Hen, hen, act like a hen.

….

The purposes of doing that is to make a relaxing atmosphere for Ss to concentrate on the English class. As well help them review the the name of the animals. Help them get good preparation for the new content.

Step 2 Presentation

I show Ss a beautiful farm full of animals on the screen. Guide Ss to guess how many the animals there are with the help of multi-media computer. I present horses and write it on the Bb. Have Ss listen and imitate with gestures. Then I present goats, sheep, cows and lambs in the same way. I make Ss clear about the pronunciation[s][z]. After presentations I get Ss to chant in groups looking at my gestures:

Group 1and 2: What are they?

Group 3and 4: Sheep sheep sheep.

As we know, Ss are characterized by image thinking. They can understand the content with the help of the gestures easily. Chanting together will help Ss strengthen their memory and it can make the poor Ss feel confident. As well Ss’ pronunciation and intonation will be trained well.

Step 3 Drill

In this step I design three activities:

Activity 1: Play a passing game

Show Ss a picture. Get them practise in pairs in a chain way by passing the picture.

Activity 2: Singing

I organize Ss to sing according to the melody of “Who is wearing yellow today?” looking at the teacher’s gestures.

Ss are fluent with the structure after various drills. Every student has a chance to practice English.

Step 4 Practice

Activity 1: Memory game

Show Ss a picture of farm full of animals. Ss observe it for about ten seconds. Then the picture disappears. Let them have a competition. Ss practice with What are they? They are… in groups. Let’s test who has the best memory.

Activity 2: Find out the differences between Picture A and Picture B

Show Ss 2 pictures similar. There are many animals. Ss are required to practice with What are they? They are… . After doing that Ss are needed to describe the room with There are….

It aims to stimulating Ss’ speaking hunger and help them consolidate what they’ve learned. Proper competition can arouse Ss’ interest. Moreover it trains Ss’ spirit of cooperation and consciousness of competition. Most important it trains Ss’ sense of loving life and animals and their ability of observation.

Step 5 Consolidation and homework for extension

(1) Listen and read unit 6 At a farm Part A

(2)Write the names of animals

(3) Write the sentences according to the pictures

Ss can’t keep what they’ve learned long in their mind. It’s necessary and important to assign some exercises after class. T can check whether Ss have consolidated the content through the feedback.

At last I’ll show you my Bb Designing:( I divide the whole class into 2 groups : Moon and Sun. And the smiling faces are given to them if they are better)
