　　this applicant shows that her interest in public interest law flows naturally from her volunteer activities and life eperiences. when you finish this essay, do you have a sense of unity and completion? she tied her conclusion both to the highlights of the body and her lead.

　　the last thing i remember is falling asleep during a late night rerun of the twilight zone. so when it happened, it was especially eerie, like i had stepped into a lost episode, but rod serling was nowhere in sight; for moment, neither was anybody else. at 4:31 am a merciless shove pushed me off my bed. i crawled on the floor, trying to escape the cruel, uncontrollable shaking, but it followed me. it followed me down the stairs and underneath the dining room table where my family joined me. little did i realize that before the morning sun rose again, i would see everything differently.

　　my world changed. the 6.7 earthquake which crippled the northridge area on january 17, 1994 rattled and ripped apart the fibers of security in our neighborhood. our home was ruined; smashed glass, crumbled walls, and the lack of electricity, gas, and water made it uninhabitable. without basic utilities, we slept and lived in our car for nine days while guarding our home from looters.

　　the damage was everywhere. a personal landmark, the granada hills kaiser permanente medical center, collapsed. the site where i had volunteered as a teen advisor 鈥?lobbying for and improving the quality of the teen health clinic while working one- on-one with underprivileged, problem teenagers 鈥?no longer eisted. only an empty lot and the memory of a valuable and productive medical and psychological outreach program for troubled youth remained.

　　as much as northridge and its surrounding regions changed eternally, so did the lives of the victims internally. following this traumatic eperience, i developed a keen awareness of the fragility of life and a newly restored appreciating for the simplest of my old comforts. as vulnerable and edgy as i was with every aftershock that rolled through the area, i consoled myself with reminders of how we were spared.

　　with a profound sense of gratitude for our relative good fortune, within weeks of the initial quake i volunteered at the american red cross earthquake relief center.

　　as my family and i rebuilt our home and our lives, i translated for iranian earthquake victims and performed various clerical tasks. yet, my most valuable contribution to the earthquake relief team stemmed from the moral support i was qualified to provide. with my earthquake eperience, i was able to comfort the teary-eyed victims who approached us for help. i gave them the hope and understanding they sought from a primarily out-of-state staff. i benefited too: my work for the red cross aroused my curiosity in public interest law.

　　i had the opportunity to eplore this new interest in the summer when i interned in washington d.c. for congressman howard p. (buck) smith of california. that summer i was responsible for attending meetings and informing the congressmans staff of the issues discussed. one of the issues i followed dealt with a proposed guideline to prohibit religious epression in the workplace due to its allegedly offensive nature. defining such acts as wearing a star of david or praying silently before a meal as religious harassment, the bill attempted to equate these acts with verbal or seual harassment.

　　still the most fulfilling eperience of my internship was serving the mr. smiths constituents when they wrote, called, or visited our washington office. their concerns covered many issues, including city maintenance and the enforcement of fcc regulations on local radio stations; yet, most cries for help grew out of the january 17 disaster.

　　my eperience in the earthquake proved to be useful in my internship. after all, i was working with mr. earthquake himself. as the only intern from northridge, i was assigned to the earthquake project. i acted as a liaison between constituents and the small business administration, federal emergency management agency, and other governmental agencies that handled quake reconstruction monies. because of my eperience, i was again able to empathize with victims in a way that neither the staff nor the other interns could. as a result of my work, i gained a more profound grasp of the legal process and how it was able to help northridge residents with their post earthquake problems.

　　the january 17 earthquake dramatically changed my world 鈥?both inside and out. in the red cross shelter and in congressman smiths office, my career ambitions took shape: public interest law grabbed me. now i want to help those who cannot purchase legal services, not only by providing the empathy gained during my own trying eperiences, but also by using the skills and knowledge i will acquire at the abc law school. with this preparation, i look forward to helping others escape their legal or bureaucratic twilight zones.

As the environment loses the green part, if this situation keeps spreading, then human being will face the great challenge to make a living.

　　The fight against the desert needs everyone's action. Experts have tried to invent new technology to return the wasted land green. While for the ordinary people, we should have the consciousness of protecting the environment any time, such as do not throw the rubbish away. We should also make an effort to plant more trees.

　　Now with effort that people make together, the desertification in our country is no longer spread, which is such inspiring news. In the coming future, we hope to return the world more green.

　　According to a recent poll， 61 percent of American high school students have admitted to cheating on exams at least once. It can be argued such a response my not mean much. After all， most students have been faced with the temptation to peek at a neighbor's test paper. And students can be hard on themselves in judging such behavior. However， there are other indications that high school cheating may be on the rise.

　　More and more states are requiring students to pass competency tests in order to receive their high school diplomas. And many educators fear that an increase in the use of state exams will lead to a corresponding rise in cheating. A case in point is students in New York State who faced criminal misdemeanor charges for possessing and selling advance copies of state Regents examinations.

　　Cheating is considered to be a major problem in colleges and universities. Several professors say they've dropped the traditional term paper requirement because many students buy prewritten term papers， and they can't track down all the cheaters anymore.

　　Colleges and universities across the nation have decided to do more than talk about the rise in student cheating. For instance， the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland launched a campaign to stop one form of cheating. As 409 students filed out of their exam， they found all but one exit blocked. Proctors asked each student to produce an ID card with an attached photo. Students who said they'd left theirs in the dorm or at home had a mug shot taken. The purpose of the campaign was to catch "ringers，" students who take tests for other students.

　　The majority of students at the University of Maryland applauded the campaign. The campus newspaper editorial said， "Like police arresting speeders， the intent is not to catch everyone but rather to catch enough to spread the word."

　　We frequently hear about "the good old days"， when Americans were better， happier， and more honest. But were they more honest？ Maybe yes， a long time ago when life was very different from what it is today.

　　School children used to know the story of how Abraham Lincoln walked five miles to return a penny he'd overcharged a customer. It's the kind of story we think of as myth. But in the case of Lincoln， the story is true … unlike the story of George Washington and the cherry tree. Washington's first biographer invented the tale of little George saying to his father， "I cannot tell a lie. I did it with my ax." What is important in both stories， however， is that honesty was seen as an important part of the American character.

　　And these are just two stories out of many. Students in the last century usually didn't read "fun" stories. They read stories that taught moral values. Such stories pointed out quite clearly that children who lied， cheated， or stole came to bad ends.

　　Parents may have further reinforced those values. It's difficult to know. We do know that children didn't hear their parents talk of cheating the government on income taxes - there weren't any.

　　A clue as to why Americans may have been more honest in the past lies in the Abe Lincoln story. Lincoln knew his customer. They both lived in a small town. Would a check-out person at a large supermarket return money a customer？ It's less likely. On the other hand， would overnight guests at an inn run by a husband and wife， steal towels？ It's less likely.

　　Perhaps this tells us that people need to know one another to be at their honest best.

　　The vast majority of Americans still believe that honesty as an important part of the American Character. For that reason， there are numerous watch-dog committees at all levels of society. Although signs of dishonesty in school， business， and government seem much more numerous in recent years than in the past， could it be that we are getting better at revealing such dishonesty？

　　There is some evidence that dishonesty may ebb and flow. When times are hard， incidents of theft and cheating usually go up. And when times get better such incidents tend to go down.

　　Cheating in school also tends to ebb and flow. But it doesn't seem linked to the economy.

　　Many educators feel that as students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities， they are less likely to cheat. Surprisingly， some efforts to prevent cheating may actually encourage cheating - a person may feel "they don't trust me anyway，" and be tempted to "beat the system." Distrust can be contagious. But， so can trust！
