Vertical Cavity Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers: Physics and Applications

A review is presented of the state-of-the-art in vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs), focusing in particular on recent developments in theoretical analysis, wavelengths of operation, materials systems, potential applications and a design example.
